When not to convert GIF to ASF
- Skip ASF for archival masters: lossy compression discards detail, so keep the GIF original.
- Flatten transparency first: ASF has no alpha channel, so composite GIF over a background color.
Limits
Starting point: GIF - 256-color animation with 1-bit transparency. Limited to 256 colors per frame, so gradients may band. Live-archive headers can confuse players; remuxing usually repairs them. Set the quality slider near 80-90 for ASF photos from GIF, and keep dimensions matched to the source.
