About GIF to PNG

GIF stores 256-color frames with 1-bit transparency, a format standardized in 1989 for simple loops. PNG keeps the same picture with a full-color palette, lossless compression, and smooth alpha, so gradients that banded in the source render cleanly. Only the current frame carries over, because PNG cannot animate; pick the frame to export before converting. The 256-color limit stays visible as banding baked into the source pixels. For still graphics PNG is the safer archive, while loops belong in animated formats.

Limits

Starting point: GIF - 256-color animation with 1-bit transparency. Limited to 256 colors per frame, so gradients may band. Lossless quality means larger files than JPEG. Export PNG from GIF at matched dimensions; every pixel maps across, so large sources stay large.
