About JPG/JPEG to AVIF

JPG encodes photos with an older lossy codec and no alpha channel, so detail caps at what the source stored. AVIF re-encodes the picture with the AV1 codec, reaching similar detail at much smaller sizes. There is no alpha to preserve, so flatten the source onto a background first. Older viewers may not open the result, so keep a JPG copy for sharing. Encoding takes longer than JPG, and stills carry no frames, so animation settings do not apply to this pair.
